Learning options

Caring for the dying is part of providing quality aged care. palliAGED has evidence-based resources to support Australia's aged care workforce to learn, plan, and provide palliative care. These resources can be used as part of self-directed learning or in-house training.

palliAGED introduction modules for aged care

The palliAGED introduction modules for aged care nurses provide a gateway to training and understanding in palliative care including symptoms and care issues:

• Introduction to palliative care and palliAGED
• Self-care
• Person-centred care
• Talking about dying
• Recognising deterioration
• Palliative care case conferences
• End-of-life care pathways
• Pain management
• Symptom management
• Care issues

A companion manual for the introduction modules is also available. This provides communication tips and more detailed information about selected tools and processes referred to in the modules.

Aged care services can also make use of these modules within their organisation by adding these to their local learning management system (LMS).

palliAGED practice tip sheets for nurses and for careworkers

The palliAGED practice tip sheets for nurses in aged care provide information across 42 topics for nurses new to providing palliative care. Nurses responsible for training and education of careworkers/personal attendants with this role may also find these useful in combination with the palliAGED practice tip sheets for careworkers.

Aged care journeys in palliative care for careworkers

The aged care journeys were developed through research conducted by the Gold Coast Primary Healthcare Network, Palliative Care Queensland, COTA Queensland, and Beacon Strategies. These four journeys in palliative care provide examples of issues and resources for careworker training.

An accompanying educator guide provides background information for training based on these journeys.
